Winchester Walkers Beat The Northern Ireland National Team

Winchester Walking Football Club completed their first tour with a 2-1 victory over the Northern Ireland Over 60s national team on Sunday, 30 March.

The hosts took the lead in their six-a-side match lasting 60 minutes, at Bangor FC’s Claneboye Park Stadium, but the Winchester Club’s A team equalised through striker Barry Poffley, after a flowing move. Barry later nipped in to hit the winner and complete his brace.

The B team was playing the Northern Irish Over 70s side simultaneously and the home side led 2-0 at half time but Geoff Holtom was set up for his first international goal by Dave Sewell to pull one back before the end.

Both Winchester goalkeepers, Rob Nicholls and guest player Dimitrie, made several excellent saves.

On Friday the A team won a mini tournament involving three teams from Bangor and the second Winchester six who played four matches of 15 minutes duration.

Winchester A finished top of the table with 10 points and their scorers were Barry Poffley with six, Graham Newland (2) and Ian Dowson (1).

Winchester coach Heather Kirkland said “I was really proud of the players who put in a tremendous effort and showed great team spirit in a very competitive weekend.”

The club also appreciated the hospitality shown by their Irish hosts who provided transport between Bangor and George Best Belfast City Airport, and some refreshments. In return for their generous hospitality Winchester are making a contribution of £200 towards the Bangor club’s chosen charity, Prostate Cancer.

However the club’s Aer Lingus return flight to Southampton was cancelled and players made alternative arrangements, some staying up to an additional 24 hours to enjoy the Belfast views.

The Winchester squad was: Ian Dowson, Geoff Holtom, Sue Hume, John Kane, David Kirkby, Heather Kirkland, Patrick Murphy, Brian Mustoe, Graham Newland, Rob Nicholls, Barry Poffley, Paul Reade, David Sewell and Mick Turner.

The Winchester club plays at the University Stadium, Milland Road, Winchester, on Tuesday mornings and is open to all abilities aged over 50. For more information see www.winchesterwalkingfc.com
